Packing your hospital bag is one of the final, most exciting milestones of your pregnancy. It’s a tangible sign that you are getting so close to meeting your little one! To help make this process feel organized and stress-free, we've created a comprehensive checklist. This guide is broken down into essentials for mom, baby, and your support person, so you can pack with peace of mind and focus on the main event.

When Should I Pack My Hospital Bag?

A great rule of thumb is to have your bags packed and ready to go by the time you are 36 or 37 weeks pregnant. Babies don't always follow a strict schedule, and having your bag packed early means you'll be prepared for a speedy departure if your little one decides to make an early debut.

The Checklist: For Mom

Your bag should focus on documents, comfort during labor, and essentials for postpartum recovery.

  • Important Documents: Photo ID, insurance card, and any hospital pre-registration paperwork.
  • Clothing: A comfortable labor gown (if you prefer not to wear the hospital's), a cozy robe, slippers or non-slip socks, and a comfortable, loose-fitting outfit to wear home.
  • Postpartum Essentials: 2-3 nursing bras or tank tops, several pairs of high-waisted, comfortable underwear (dark colors are best), and your own preferred brand of heavy-duty maternity pads if you wish.
  • Toiletries: Don't forget lip balm (hospital air is very dry!), a toothbrush and toothpaste, hair ties, deodorant, and any basic skincare items that will make you feel refreshed.
  • Comfort & Tech: An extra-long phone charging cord is a must-have! Also pack headphones, a portable speaker, and your own pillow if it will help you feel more comfortable.

The Checklist: For Baby

Your baby needs very little, as the hospital provides most essentials. Focus on what you'll need to bring them home safely and comfortably.

  • Installed Car Seat: This is non-negotiable. You cannot leave the hospital without a properly installed infant car seat. Have this ready in your car weeks in advance.
  • Going-Home Outfit: Pack one outfit in Newborn size and another in 0-3 Months size. You never know how big your little one will be!
  • Baby Blanket: A weather-appropriate blanket for the car ride home.
  • Optional Items: A soft hat and a pair of socks or booties. The hospital will provide diapers, wipes, and swaddles during your stay.

The Checklist: For Your Partner / Support Person

Labor can be a marathon, and your support person needs to be comfortable too!

  • A change of comfortable clothes and something to sleep in.
  • Their own toiletries.
  • Plenty of snacks and a reusable water bottle.
  • A phone, charger, and any entertainment (book, tablet) for potential downtime.
  • A camera (if you plan to use something other than a phone).

Important Notes

Before you finalize your bag, it's a good idea to check your hospital's specific policies. Some hospitals have rules about things like video recording during delivery or the use of certain personal items. It's also helpful to leave valuables like expensive jewelry at home.
