Your menstrual cycle is divided into two main phases: the follicular phase and the luteal phase, separated by ovulation. Understanding these phases, particularly the follicular phase, provides insight into your cycle's timing and fertility.
What is the Follicular Phase?
The follicular phase starts on the first day of your period (Day 1) and ends on the day of ovulation. During this phase, your body produces follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which stimulates several follicles in your ovaries to mature. Eventually, one follicle becomes dominant and releases an egg during ovulation.
How Long Should It Be?
A typical follicular phase lasts between 11 and 21 days, though it can be shorter or longer depending on the individual and their cycle length. Unlike the luteal phase, which is usually quite consistent, the follicular phase is the part of your cycle that varies most from person to person and from cycle to cycle.
How This Calculator Works
This tool estimates your follicular phase length using a simple formula: your total cycle length minus your luteal phase length. While this provides a useful estimate, remember that the only way to know your exact follicular phase length is to confirm the exact day you ovulated using methods like Basal Body Temperature (BBT) charting or Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs).
